In our evolving national fight against terrorism:

I believe in and support our nation’s current role and mission objectives in Afghanistan

I have the highest respect and confidence in our military leadership. General Petraeus and our troops on the ground will have my continued and continual support to complete their mission objectives.

In line with this support though, I concur with President Obama that our government must establish necessary benchmarks for troop reductions in Afghanistan

The troop withdrawal will proceed in such a manner that provides no opportunity for the reemergence of terrorist elements, but instead a safe transition of responsibility back to the Afghan government and military trained Afghan security forces

In Congress, I will work to ensure that the lessons we learned in Iraq are not lost in our fight to end terrorism in Afghanistan
